There has been a big cultural shift since the 60’s, 70’s and even 80’s when scientists thought of publishing instead of patenting. Somewhere along the way, scientists have changed their goals from publishing knowledge and gaining recognition to assembling a portfolio of patents with the possibility of publishing purposely edited research that could lead to another patent. Being an esteemed scientist in his 90’s, Dr. Leonard Hayflick has witnessed this transformation firsthand along with the advantages and disadvantages it has brought with it.
